It’s official: Trustees raise tuition for summer session
The Board of Trustees unanimously passed an increase on Summer tuition students have been fighting against for months. Tuition for this upcoming Summer quarter will be increased 10% for non-resident undergraduates and 12% for residents. When the decision was made on May 12, students were left with six weeks to come up with the extra cash and less than seven days until registration for Summer opened to decide whether or not they could foot the bill.
TESC Divest initiatives pass!
On June 2, 2010, students at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, made history by passing two resolutions supporting human rights, upholding international law, and promoting a just peace in the Palestine/Israel conflict.
The first resolution calls for The Evergreen State College Foundation to divest from companies that profit from Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, as part of instituting a socially responsible investment policy.
The second resolution calls on the college to ban the use of Caterpillar, Inc. equipment from campus.
Who Trusts the Trustees?
Nearly 150 students packed the auditorium where the Evergreen Board of Trustees would be deciding whether to raise the already exorbitant price of summer tuition. Students held the floor for almost an hour and a half on Mar. 9 as they explained, debated, screamed, cried, demanded, and even pleaded with the board to seek other options and to not raise tuition.
Bored of Trustees
On November 11, the Evergreen Board of Trustees met from 9 am until 3 pm. At 2:30, the board opened up for public comment. The public comment time is short and at the end of a six hour meeting. This creates a small window in which students can address concerns to the board.
The Board of Trustees has almost total control over the school’s long-term policy and plans. However, many on the board are not involved with Evergreen, nor do they have a deep understanding about Evergreen culture and student history.
