Appropriation: taking something for own use; the taking of something that belongs to or is associated with somebody else, especially without permission
==============
Some Questions to think about before and at this event are:
1. How do you define culture?
2. How do you define appropriation?
3. What culture(s) are you a part of/do you claim?
4. What is American culture? Any thoughts on the "melting pot"?
5. Where do you draw the line between appropriation (stealing) and exchange (trading)?
6. Who decides what appropriation is, and what constitutes something belonging to a particular culture?
7. What is cultural fusion?
8. What examples of cultural appropriation do you have?
9. What ways can we undo negative effects of cultural appropriation?
10. Where do folks get taught to essentialize cultures?
11. How do schools teach about a broad variety of situations without tokenizing and/or exoticizing?
If you decide to come, please come prepared for passionate discussion, and to not purposefully disrespect.
